Black screen, no picture: what to do?
Cable, screen, RAM, graphics card or motherboard: I find the cause of the black screen and repair it, free quote.
Your PC turns on but the screen stays black?
Don’t panic: it is not always the graphics card or the motherboard. Here is how to find out.
Possible causes
- Video cable (HDMI, DisplayPort) or screen at fault
- Graphics card poorly seated or faulty
- Memory (RAM) poorly positioned or faulty
- Faulty motherboard or processor
- Broken laptop screen or dead backlight
To try
- Test another cable and another screen, or another input
- On a desktop PC, plug the screen into the graphics card, not the motherboard
- Turn on again after unplugging all peripherals
- On a laptop, plug in an external screen: if the picture appears, the laptop screen is the cause

Frequently asked questions
My PC turns on but shows nothing, is it the graphics card?
Not always: a cable, a RAM module or the screen can be enough. I test each element before concluding.
My laptop has a black screen but I can hear it start
It is often the screen or the screen cable. If an external screen works, the graphics card is fine.
